Shelby Sue’s Storybooks

On December 10th, my pregnancy with Shelby was quickly ended. Shelby had stopped moving and an ultrasound showed that she was in distress. She had wrapped the umbilical cord around her neck three times and an emergency c-section was required. Shelby entered the world 5 weeks early at 3lbs and 14 oz. She was immediately rushed to the NICU.
While in the NICU, Shelby struggled to breathe. She was on a respirator for a while. Her liver and kidneys had been damaged due to lack of oxygen from the cord being wrapped around her neck. She was such a fighter! She was constantly making improvements. Every time the staff would give us a timeline for an expected goal, she would beat the timeline. She was such a strong, wise child. We gave her the nickname of “Half-pint” since she was half the size of any of her siblings at birth.

On December 20th, we got the news that we had prayed for. Shelby was going home. She was
finally going to meet her two older brothers and two older sisters. We were all going to be
together on Christmas! On December 21st, we brought Shelby home. The kids arrived to find her sitting in her car seat under the Christmas tree. It was a wonderful moment!

December 23rd, we awoke to find that Shelby had gone to be with God. She had passed away sometime during the early morning. The cause of death was ruled as SIDS. It was 2 days before Christmas and we were devastated. We had 13 wonderful days with our daughter! We will always wish for more time but truly appreciate the gift of the time we were given.

The Lord has blessed my family in so many ways. We may never understand the reason he chose to take Shelby from our family at such a young age, but every day we strive to keep our hearts open to our family, friends and mostly to God so that one day, we will may find an answer to such a hard question……Why?
